Distinguishing Ethnicities

Patterns of migration in American weren't always voluntary. Starting with African Americans, they were forced to migrate to the Americas as slaves, settling in the Southern regions. Hispanics, and Asian Americans were voluntary migrations, however upon arrival they have been discriminated even up to the point that they were moved from the area also.

For the longest time, African Americans started their lives in the South, but eventually, they later began to move North because in the North they were considered free whereas in the South they were considered slaves. As laws were passed later down the road, African Americans have made their way toward the West Coast.

Laws such as the Jim Crow Laws were used in the U.S. to enfore racial segregation. The Jim Crows laws limited African Americans in America from improving their status in America and prevented them from reaching equality with other races. In South Africa, a similar situation was taking place. The government in South Africa created the system called Apartheid which seperated South Africa into different groups. Forced blacks to live in poor rural lands called homelands away from the whites. They weren't allowed to vote, had poor education, and had low paying jobs. Some of these laws were: Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Act No. 55 of 1949, Group Areas Act 1950, and Extention of University Education No. 45 of 1959.
