Nation States
A nation state is a state that contains a single nation. The state is a homogenenous based group who relatively share the same ideals, and feeling of common nationality. A nation-state would be Iceland.
Since we don't see nation states to be common, but very rare, the next common state is to be a multinational state. Instead of only one nation inhabitating their state, there are now two or more. United Kingdom is an example of a mulitnational state, because it contains 4 main nationalities which are the English, Welsh, Scottish, and Irish.
With the concept of empires being built, out from these empires came colonies. These areas would be considered the subordinate to the metropole of those cities. During the last two centuries, Europen countries began to establish over-the-sea empires which included colonies at the time. As of now, colonies, and empires aren't desired, so as time passed, the desire for self-determination in a government became popular, so empires and colonies began to wither away.
