Boundaries
Different factors go into seperating states in todays world. With the obvious one being physical boundaries. Physical boundaries are naturally occurring divisions between two areas, and aren't man made. These boundaries include mountain ranges, rivers, oceans, seas, and deserts. An example of a physical boundary is the Rio Grande river. It physically seperates the northeast part of Mexico's border with the United States.
Other factors also go into play when seperating states. This factor is cultural boundaries. Cultural boundaries which is also known as ethnographic boundaries are the boundaries that are lines that which run along differences in ethnicities. This can include things such as religious differences, language differences, and/or ethnic differences. An example would be in Canada. In Quebec, the main spoken language is french, whereas everywhere else it is English. That area is french dominating.

The 5 different shapes of states include: Elongated states, prorupted states, perforated states, fragmented states, and landlocked states. Elongated states are usually long and narrow, and have poor internal communications, prorupted states are states that are compact like, with large projecting extentsions, perforated states are states that completely surrounds another state, fragmented states are states that have several discontinous pieces of territory, and lastly land locked states are states that lack a direct outlet to the sea because its complete surrounding of another state.

What is gerrymandering? Gerrymandering is the process of redrawing legislative boundaries for the purpose of benefiting the political party in power through excess, wasted, and stacked votes. Every ten years, the lines are redrawn by the political party who won at the time, so if democratics won that election, they are able to draw these lines, which are in the benefit of them.
