Terms to Know

White Flight: Movement of white city-dwellers to the suburbs to escape the influx of minorities. 

 

Sprawl: Development of new housing sites at relatively low density and at locations that are not contigous to the existing built up area.

 

Bedroom Communities: Commuter towns inhabited by people who drive or take public transport to another city for work.

 

Zoning: Dividing an area into zones or sections reserved for different purposes such as residence, business, and manufacturing.

 

NIMBY: Meaning "Not in my back ard" oppposistion by residents to a proposal for a new development close to them.

 

Revitalization: Construction of new shopping districts, entertainment venues, and cultural attractions to entice young urban professionls back into the cities.

 

Gentrification: Trend of middle and upper middle income americans moving into the city center and rehabilitating much of the architecture but also replacing low income population.

 

Anchor: Child born a U.S. citizen in order to facilitate immigration through family reunifcation under the Nationality Act of 1965
